Aqueous paper-coating composition with an alkaline pH of between 4 and 7, comprising: - an insoluble and alkali-nonswellable polymer latex A which has a mean particle diameter OA of between 60 and 300 nm, - an insoluble, alkali-swellable polymer latex B which has a particle diameter OB of between 20 and 150 nm measured at pH of between 2 and 4 and capable of swelling at least 1.5 times in diameter in an alkaline medium, - an inorganic pigment C containing at least 40 % by weight of CaCO3.
