[origin: EP0509956A1] The arrangement has a cylinder insert (2) arranged in a cylinder block (1), which insert is enclosed by an annular chamber through which coolant flows and is covered by a cylinder cover (3). The coolant which comes from the annular chamber flows through the cylinder cover. After flowing through the cylinder cover (3) the coolant passes by way of a radiator (7) back to the annular chamber. A line (16) leading to the cylinder cover (3) branches off from the line (9) leading from the radiator (7) to the annular chamber. A governor (18) apportions the quantity of coolant coming from the radiator to the line (9 and 16) leading to the annular chamber and to the cylinder cover as a function of the engine load. A bypass line (15) which, downstream of the branch of the line (16) leading to the cylinder cover, opens into the line (9) leading to the annular chamber, is connected to the coolant line (6) between the cylinder cover (3) and the radiator (7). <IMAGE>
