Abstract (en)
[origin: WO9111601A1] In the process disclosed, a conventional monitoring procedure is used to detect whether a cylinder is misfiring. If this is the case, an attempt is made to interrupt the fuel supply to the cylinder concerned. If this succeeds, the other cylinders are supplied with a lean mixture. If it does not succeed, all the cylinders are operated on rich mixture. The effect of making the mixture lean without interrupting the fuel supply to the cylinder concerned is that, following combustion in the cylinders, no fuel reaches the catalytic converter to burn there in the oxygen aspirated by the misfiring cylinder.
