The process is characterised in that the leather is treated with a UV absorber selected from the group a) 2-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula (1) <IMAGE> b) 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazoles of the formula (2) <IMAGE> and c) 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-s-triazines of the formula (3) <IMAGE> in which the variables have the meanings given in the Claims.
