Installation comprising a radio-frequency receiver (6), installed on the travelling crane (1) with which it is combined in such a way as to provide for the remote control of this crane from a corresponding, portable, radio-frequency transmitter (8), an installation characterised in that the travelling crane (1) also comprises an infrared transmitter (11) while the portable transmitter (8) comprises a corresponding infrared receiver (12), these infrared receiver and transmitter being combined with the radio-frequency receiver and transmitter in such a way that at least the starting of the travelling crane can only be carried out by the radio link remote control from the portable transmitter (8) when this portable transmitter is in an area (111), with respect to the travelling crane, such that it can receive a prior infrared frequency remote control authorisation signal. <IMAGE>
