[origin: WO9111120A1] In a system for feeding tobacco to a cigarette making machine, a closed airflow is set up in a suction band apparatus (10) by means of a fan (82) through a chimney (76) and an air-permeable band (84) upon which a tobacco layer (86) is formed for feeding to the cigarette making machine, tobacco particles being entrained into this closed air stream from a hopper apparatus (12) through which a further open air circulation system is established, there being but a sole airflow connection (72) between the closed airflow system (80) and the open airflow system, through which connection air passes to compensate for leakage in the closed system. This connection may be established via a further closed airflow system within which further tobacco particle processing takes place, and additional closed airflow systems in which other processing steps take place may be similarly connected to the open airflow system. The arrangement permits the elimination of air locks between various portions of the system.
