[origin: EP0515958A1] In a high-voltage starting transformer for starting and operating AC high-pressure gas-discharge lamps in motor vehicles, having a core, having a primary winding which surrounds the core and consists of a foil, and having a secondary winding which surrounds the core and consists of a foil, an insulating film being arranged between the individual layers of the primary winding and of the secondary winding, in order that the high-voltage starting transformer has a secondary inductance which is independent of current, has as small a size as possible and has as high an efficiency as possible with a simple and cost-effective winding construction which is suitable for high-voltage, the core is constructed as an elongated core consisting of a soft-magnetic ferrite material, and the core has a cross- sectional area and the secondary winding a number of turns such that the core is unsaturated in all operating conditions. <IMAGE>
