Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0517149A1] A method is described for packaging metal coils (1), which are to have an open coil eye (15) in the middle even when packaging has been completed. It especially concerns steel coils. According to this method, the coil is first wrapped on all sides with stretch film (14), the coil eye (15), however, remaining open on both end faces and the stretch film (14) only extending into the coil eye to a limited extent. Then the entire surface of the circumference of the coil is wrapped in a single layer of a laminar packaging material (8). The laminar packaging material (8) slightly overlaps the end faces in this process. In the next stage, the coil is wrapped round on all sides by another piece of stretch film (17), which is stretched to such an extent that the overlapping ends of the laminar packaging material at the outside edges of the end faces of the coil are bent downwards, thus forming an edge protection. Here, too, the stretch film only extends into the coil eye (15), leaving it open in principle, however. Finally, plastic inside circles (18) which are in each case open on the inside and which simultaneously fix and seal off the layers of stretch film in the coil eye are inserted into the coil eye at both end faces. Fastening material such as tightened steel tapes (19) finally secures the packaging. <IMAGE>
