[origin: EP0520977A2] In order to be able to carbonise waste materials with organic constituents economically in a low-temperature carbonisation process, by heating the waste materials during their continuous conveyance along a treatment section to a suitable carbonisation temperature with air largely excluded, it is proposed that the carbonisation gases fed to the treatment section on the inlet side and flowing upwards at least in the region where the waste materials are charged, are passed along upstream of or in the region, where the waste materials are charged, at a higher flow velocity than in the region of the downstream treatment section, the waste materials taken along by the carbonisation gases as a carrier gas stream being heated in free flight in the hot carbonisation gases, while the non-carbonisable residual materials are precipitated out of the carrier gas stream against the upwards-directed gas flow. <IMAGE>
