[origin: US5298740A] A non-linear optical fiber receives two light waves by its two ends, each light wave being modulated by means of two modulators. These light waves create photoinduced index variations in the fiber which are proportional to the intensity of the optical field. A reading source emits a reading wave in the fiber. This reading wave is reflected at least partially by the index variation or variations. A detector receives the reflected wave and makes it possible, through the computation of the returning time of the wave, to determine the position of the index variations. Applications: very wide passband signal correlators.

Une fibre optique non linéaire (F1) reçoit par ses deux extrémités (A1, A2) deux ondes lumineuses (E1, E2) modulées chacune par deux signaux (S1(t), S2(t)) à l'aide de deux modulateurs (M1, M2). Ces ondes lumineuses créent dans la fibre des variations d'indices photoinduites proportionnelles à l'intensité du champ optique. Une source de lecture (L2) émet dans la fibre une onde de lecture qui est réfléchie au moins partiellement par la oul es variations d'indice. Un détecteur (P) reçoit l'onde réfléchie et permet, en calculant le temps de retour de l'onde, de déterminer la position des variations d'indices. Applications : Corrélateurs de signaux très large bande passante. <IMAGE>
