[origin: EP0539791A1] In a method and/or an apparatus for filling bottles or similar containers, the containers are rinsed out and preloaded with an inert gas in a preloading phase which precedes the filling phase. The return gas from a return gas channel is used for rinsing and the at least partial preloading. In order to keep the return gas as germ-free as possible, the containers are treated with a sterilising agent in a pretreatment phase which precedes the preloading phase. Furthermore, air and/or sterilising medium which has been forced out in the sterilising phase and/or in the preloading phase is carried off into the atmosphere or into a channel separate from the return gas channel.
