[origin: EP0541492A1] A flowable, atomisable substance (74), in particular a paint, a varnish or a glue, is applied onto a substrate by at least one manual or automatic spray pistol (12) using a gaseous, heated pressure medium. This medium, usually compressed air, is heated at or in the spray pistol (12). In this case, a heating cartridge (14) is used through which the pressure medium is passed at least twice in counter-current. It is initially preheated and then brought to an adjustable temperature. The apparatus for carrying out this process includes, in addition to the spray pistol(s) (12), a supply line (70) each for the atomisable substance (74) and the gaseous heated pressure medium and a regulatable spray nozzle (72). The feed line (22,28) of the pressure medium includes a unit (10) for preconditioning without heating and a downstream exchangeable heating cartridge (14) adapted on the spray pistol (12) or integrated in the pistol grip. <IMAGE>
