[origin: EP0542113A1] In a chuck (1) for grasping and fixing a roll of web material to be printed wound on a core (5), which chuck can be made to travel axially, by means of a drive apparatus connected to a monitoring device, in a supporting arm of a roll changer and comprises a cylindrical chuck body (2) and a frustoconical chuck tip (3), the chuck tip (3) has a sensor head (8,10,11,14), mechanically actuatable by contact with the core or with the roll of web material to be printed, for detecting the position of the core (5) to be received at which reception is not possible without damaging the core (5). In the sensor head (8,10,11,14), an electrical switch (15,16,18,19) is integrated which, on actuation of the sensor head (8,10,11,14), activates an electrical circuit (20). The circuit (20) controls the drive device of the chuck such that an axial forwards movement of the chuck (1) for grasping the core (5) is reversed in the event that the core (5) or roll of web material to be printed is contacted, and the monitoring device responds to issue a fault signal. <IMAGE>
