A method and an apparatus are described for the expanding and drying of tobacco by means of steam and/or hot gas, according to which method the tobacco is metered into the inner compartment (4), defined at least from two flat jets (3, 3') which flow into the channel from the opposing sources outside the channel walls and are guided into each other at an acute angle, and the tobacco, after the acceleration of speed by means of the flat jets, is deflected by means of a cross-flow, accelerated again, expanded and dried. <??>The device preferably consists of a partially rectangular metering channel section (A-A), which, farther on, is arranged with a gas-permeable channel segment (5) for extracting part of the treatment medium in the channel, the latter, at least in its last section, terminating with a vertical channel (8) connected thereto at 90 DEG , which is surrounded by a wider pipe (9) called a "tower". <IMAGE>

Es wird ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zum Expandieren und Trocknen von Tabak mittels Dampf und/oder Heissgas beschrieben, nach welchem der Tabak in den mindestens aus zwei Flachstrahlen (3,3') begrenzten Innenraum (4) dosiert wird, welche aus den gegenüberliegenden Quellen ausserhalb der Kanalwände in den Kanal hineinströmen und in einem spitzen Winkel ineinander geleitet werden, der Tabak nach der Geschwindigkeitsbeschleunigung durch die Flachstrahlen mittels Querströmung umgelenkt, wieder beschleunigt, expandiert und getrocknet wird. Die Einrichtung besteht vorzugsweise aus einem teilweise rechteckigen Dosierkanalteil (A-A), welcher im weiteren mit gasdurchlässigem Kanalsegment (5) zum Abzug eines Teiles des Behandlungsmediums im Kanal angeordnet ist und dieser mindestens in seinem letzten Teil mit einem damit bei 90° verbundenem vertikalen Kanal (8) mündet, welcher durch ein breiteres Rohi (9) sog. "Turm" umgeben ist. <IMAGE>
