[origin: EP0550018A1] An apparatus (10) for spreading a material (21) on an object (20) includes a continuously moving conveyor (22) for moving the object (20) in a downstream direction (35), and a dispenser (14) for applying the material (21) to the object (20). The apparatus (10) also includes a carriage (31) located above the conveyor (22), and a spreader (70) coupled to the carriage (31) for engaging the material (21) applied to the object (20) by the dispenser (14) to spread the material (21) on the object (20). The apparatus (10) further includes a drive mechanism (36) for moving the carriage (31) in the downstream direction (35) over the continuously moving object (20) as the spreader (70) engages the material (21), and another mechanism (56) for providing movement of the spreader (70) relative to the carriage (31) from an first position in which the spreader (70) engages the material (21) to a second position in which the spreader (70) disengages the material (21). <IMAGE>
