[origin: EP0552750A2] In a process for the disposal of ammonia by combustion with the aid of a flare burner, in which a fuel gas is used for igniting the gas to be disposed of, it is possible to operate continuously without a fuel gas supply and without catalyst, if a burner tube is arranged underneath the flare burner with the flame passing to the latter and if the ammonia is ignited in the burner tube with the aid of a fuel gas and burned with addition of fuel gas until the flare burner has reached a temperature required for the auto-ignition of an ammonia/air mixture. After the flame zone has been displaced into the flare burner by an increase in the ammonia feed, the rate can then be increased and the fuel gas feed can be switched off entirely. <IMAGE>
