[origin: EP0553011A1] The invention relates to a writing instrument with a mechanical pencil or ball-point pen member. This instrument is characterized in that it comprises a driving element (12) accommodated or formed in its interior and capable, according to the user's choice, of receiving a writing member of the ball-point pen type (1) or of the mechanical pencil type (1'), consisting in the conventional way of a ball-point pen refill or a pencil mechanism ensuring a specific advance of the pencil when it is subjected to a compressive force on a suitable abutment (111) at its front end, and a control member capable of moving the said driving element in translation as a result of the operation of this member by the user, into a first position, in which the writing member is extended from the instrument for use, and a second inoperative position, into which it is retracted inside. <IMAGE>
