Abstract (en)

A tamper indicating closure (10) comprises a main body or cap portion (12) and a tearstrip portion (14) formed integrally with the main body (12), but adapted to be separable therefrom by virtue of being connected thereto by a plurality of frangible bridging portions (20). In use, the closure (10) is placed over the top of the neck (16) of a container (18) and urged downwardly, the tearstrip portion (14) flexing outwardly as a rib (26) thereof passes over the rib (17) on the neck of the container, the tearstrip (14) then contracting radially inwardly with a snap-fitting action. Simultaneously a cylindrical portion (15) of the main body enters the open neck of the container in a sliding frictional push-fit. In this manner the entire retentive operation between the closure (10) and the neck (16) is (a) between the tearstrip portion (14) and the exterior of the neck (16), such that in order for the closure (10) to be removed from the neck (16), the tearstrip portion must first be separated from the main body (12) and (b) by a sliding frictional push-fit cooperation between the neck (16) and the main body (12). In the preferred embodiment, the bridging portions (20) are located at a position in which, on the application of the closure to the container, they do not pass over the rim (17), and are hence not subjected on the application of the closure to the neck of the container to any significant stress. <IMAGE>
