[origin: EP0554217A1] The invention relates to an aqueous composition for pretanning leather, which is characterised in that it contains (a) a reductive saccharide having a dextrose equivalent of from 10 to 100, and (b) an aliphatic dialdehyde containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms, and is free from mineral salts. Leather treated with the aqueous composition according to the invention (wet-white leather) is highly suitable for further processing, in particular for the production of leathers which are free from heavy metals.
