[origin: EP0554218A1] The invention relates to a process for pickling hides which is characterised in that a delimed hide is treated with an aqueous liquor which contains a product of the reaction of phenol and a sulphonating agent, where the phenol:SO3 molar ratio is from 1:1.1 to 2.2, and is free from neutral salts. The hide produced by the present process is suitable for further processing in all customary tanning processes.
