[origin: EP0554549A1] The invention relates to a steam iron with an exchangeable filter insert (11) which is filled with filter material in order to remove the hardness formers from mains water and which, in the positions of use of the steam iron, is located above the water tank (3) and has a filter (19) which is arranged between the water inlet and the water tank (3) and through which the mains water flows in the axial direction, only some of the mains water running through the filter (19), whilst the remainder passes unfiltered, by way of a bypass conduit (25), into the water tank (3). This arrangement achieves a high filter effect and lengthens the life of the irons. <IMAGE>
