[origin: EP0555199A2] A vacuum chamber furnace for the thermal treatment of metal workpieces has a heating chamber (13) which is located in a housing (1) and the walls of which have closable openings (14, 15) for the passage of a cooling gas stream. In order to extend the operating range of the furnace, the latter is pivotably mounted and a pivot drive (8) is arranged in order to pivot said furnace from a horizontal position into a vertical position, and vice versa. The heating chamber (13) can be heated both in the horizontal position and in the vertical position and the cooling gas stream can also pass through the heating chamber in both positions. <IMAGE>
