[origin: EP0559283A1] The invention relates to a cathode with a porous cathode element which contains a high-melting-point metal between two mutually opposite surfaces. At a given temperature, increased emission current densities are achieved, with a long life, in that the cathode element (1) contains particles (5, 7) which consist of high-melting-point metal and whose mean diameter is less than 1000 nm, and which contains pores which are accessible from one surface or from both surfaces. <IMAGE>
