Heat insulating device intended especially for protecting a stopper rod forming a plug for a tap hole (pouring hole) of a tundish (distributor). According to the invention, it comprises two half-shells (21, 22) produced from a light composite refractory material of low elasticity, which half-shells (21, 22) include complementary assembly means (26) produced in the same material in order to associate and hold the two half-shells (21, 22) together with a view to enclosing the plug while protecting it thermally from an elevated thermal gradient in order to avoid the phenomena of solidification of the molten metal during pouring of the latter. Dispositif d'isolation thermique destiné notamment à protéger une quenouille constituant un obturateur d'un trou de coulée d'un répartiteur. Selon l'invention, il comprend deux demi-coquilles (21, 22) réalisées en un matériau réfractaire composite léger et de faible élasticité, demi-coquilles (21, 22) qui comportent des moyens d'assemblage (26) complémentaires réalisés dans le même matériau pour associer et maintenir entre elles les deux demi-coquilles (21, 22) en vue d'envelopper l'obturateur en le protégeant thermiquement d'un gradient thermique élevé pour éviter les phénomènes de solidification du métal en fusion au cours de sa coulée.
