The subject-matter of the invention is a limit switch 1 having a housing which is closed by a cover 3, having a switching device which comprises a lever 6, and a plunger or the like, and having an optical display device for the respective switching state. 2. The purpose of the invention is to create a limit switch 1 which is distinguished by an extremely compact display device 8 which can easily be installed and is extremely effective. 3. This is achieved in that the display device 8 comprises a light-emitting diode 9 and an optical fibre 10 which is arranged directly above it. In this case, the light-emitting diode is arranged in the housing 2 and the optical fibre 10 passes through one of the housing walls or the cover 3, is connected in a sealed manner to the housing wall or to the cover 3 and is constructed like a lens in the region outside the wall or the cover 3.
