An electrochemical membrane cell is provided with sheet-like electrodes (4,6) arranged on both sides of a membrane (8), each of the electrodes being in electrical contact, on its side facing away from the membrane, with an electroconductive current supply structure (5,7) which serves as a spacer, the current supply structures each being connected to a support (2,3) which encloses the cell and is made of sheet metal. Electrical contact is made between the cathode (6) and the cathodic current supply structure (7) via contact surfaces by means of a contact pressure exerted as a result of a tensioning structure, and the cathode is locked against displacement, the connection between the electrode and the current supply structure being detachable again by releasing the tensioning structure, so as to be able to replace the active electrode surfaces of the cathode in a simple manner. The membrane cell is employed in an appliance having a multiplicity of membrane cells connected in series. <IMAGE>

Eine elektrochemische Membranzelle ist mit beiderseits einer Membran (8) angeordneten flächenhaften Elektroden (4,6) versehen, wobei die Elektroden jeweils auf ihrer der Membran abgewandten Seite mit einer elektrisch leitenden, als Abstandshalter dienenden Stromzuführungsstruktur (5,7) in elektrischer Verbindung stehen, wobei die Stromzuführungsstrukturen jeweils mit einem die Zelle umschließenden Träger (2,3) aus Metallblech verbunden sind. Die Kathode (6) ist mit der kathodischen Stromzuführungsstruktur (7) mittels eines durch Spannstruktur ausgeübten Preßdrucks über Auflageflächen elektrisch kontaktiert und gegen Verschiebung arretiert, wobei die Verbindung zwischen Elektrode und Stromzuführungsstruktur durch Entspannung der Spannstruktur wieder lösbar ist, um die aktiven Elektrodenflächen der Kathode auf einfache Weise austauschen zu können. Die Membranzelle wird in einer Vorrichtung mit einer Vielzahl in Reihe geschalteter Membranzellen eingesetzt. <IMAGE>
