[origin: EP0567005A2] The invention relates to a retarding device for a web roll, in particular in rotary printing machines, having an oscillating roller which scans the web and a control device, which is influenced by the movement of said oscillating roller as a result of a change in the web tension, for the braking force of a disc brake which engages in the centre of the web roll and whose brake blocks are actuated by a ram of an operating cylinder resting at the end against a membrane which divides a pressure chamber. In order to design a device of this type in such a way that favourable control characteristics are guaranteed with simple technical means even in the case of a decreasing roll diameter and during the operation of bonding the finishing web to the new web roll, the ram is attached axially movably without friction to said membrane and at least to one further membrane which is offset to said first membrane along the ram and divides an annular pressure chamber which produces a differential force counter to the end-side pressure chamber and can be switched into the pressure medium feed line thereof. <IMAGE>
