Abstract (en)

Disclosed is a silver halide photographic material having a hydrophilic colloid layer containing at least one indolenine cyanine dye of formula (I) or (II): <CHEM> where R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5> and R<6> may be same or different and each represents an alkyl group; Z<1> and Z<2> each represents a non-metallic atomic group necessary for forming a benzo-condensed ring or naphtho-condensed ring; L represents a methine group; m represents an integer of from 0 to 3; X represents an anion; n represents 1 or 2, provided that when the compound forms an internal salt, n is 1; and the compound has at least five acidic substituents, at least two of which contain a carboxylic acid group; <CHEM> where R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5> and R<6> may be same or different and each represents an alkyl group; Z<1> and Z<2> each represents a non-metallic atomic group necessary for forming a benzo-condensed ring or naphtho-condensed ring; Z<3> represents a non-metallic atomic group necessary for forming a 5-membered or 6-membered ring; Y represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent group; X represents an anion; n represents 1 or 2, provided that when the compound forms an internal salt, n is 1; and the compound has at least four acidic substituents, at least one of which contains a carboxylic acid group. The dye is stable in the material during storage. After being processed, the dye is decolored well to give little color retention in the processed material.
