[origin: EP0569345A1] An apparatus (1) for reducing the root end of tree trunks (2) has drivers (26 and 28) which are designed as endless chains and which support the tree trunk (2) from below and from the side and set it in rotation (arrow 32) about its longitudinal axis. To reduce the root end, a drum-shaped cutting tool (3) is provided which is pivotable in a plane parallel to the bottom drivers (26). The pivot axis (55) of the cutting tool (3) can be adjusted as a function of the thickness of the tree trunk (2). When the root end is being reduced, the tree trunk (2) does not move in its longitudinal direction but is only set in rotation (arrow 32) by the drivers (26 and 28). During the reducing of the root end, the cutting tool (3) is swung out of a ready position, in which it encloses a larger angle with the axis of rotation of the tree trunk (2), until the root end of the tree trunk (2) has assumed the conicity of the tree trunk (2) by cutting off swellings present there. In the process, the cutting tool (3) pivots in a plane which is parallel to the plane defined by the bottom drivers (26). <IMAGE>
