[origin: EP0569936A1] What is provided is a packaging machine with a cutting device (4), in which an abutment (9) and a knife (12) are moved, on opposite sides of a web of packaging material (5) to be severed, up to this web. The movement of the abutment takes place via a pneumatically operated piston/cylinder device (6). So that the forces occurring during the cutting operation can be better absorbed, the piston/cylinder device is connected to an element (14) which engages on the piston (7) and which, via a drive (15) activated by a control (18), can be moved in such a way that, when an end position reached by loading the cylinder with compressed air is reached, the piston (8) is moved a further distance towards the knife (12) and the piston rod (8) is then locked in its position. <IMAGE>
