[origin: EP0570733A1] The invention relates to a coating apparatus for applying a coating colour onto a paper web, having the following features: 1.1 A coating member, for example a roll or a nozzle; 1.2 A back-up roll, which is wrapped around by the paper web and which forms with the coating member a coating zone; 1.3 A measuring device for measuring the thickness or the weight or the surface condition of the coating at several points of the width of the paper web (coating profile measurement). The invention is characterized by the following features: 1.4 The coating zone is preceded by means for controlling zone by zone the coating colour arriving in the coating zone with regard to a uniform coating profile over the width of the web; 1.5 The means serve for influencing zone by zone the throughput of coating colour on its flow path from the coating-colour inflow to the coating zone, or the temperature of the coating colour, or the consistency of the coating colour.
