[origin: EP0571732A2] In a furnace for smelting metal, in particular nonferrous metal, at least one burner nozzle (30) opens into a smelting chamber (9). In order to improve the melting of the smelting stock introduced into the smelting chamber (9) via the passage (22), the cross-section of the smelting chamber (9) is enlarged relative to the cross-section of the passage (22) in such a way that the smelting stock forms a conical heap (K) in the smelting chamber (9). Between the conical heap (K) and the wall (28) of the smelting chamber there is a free space (29).
