[origin: EP0572693A1] A burner for the combustion of a contaminated medium with gaseous or vaporous fuel has a number of concentric annular ducts (10 to 15), each annular duct (10, 12, 14) conducting the contaminated medium being provided with swirl vanes (18) and surrounded by a fuel-conducting annular duct (11, 13, 15). Arranged in the partition (23) between an annular duct (10, 12, 14) which conducts the contaminated medium and the associated fuel-conducting annular duct (11, 13, 15), in the direction of flow behind the swirl vanes (18) of the annular duct (10, 12, 14) conducting the contaminated medium and behind an annular closure plate (20), provided with nozzle bores (21), in the fuel-conducting annular duct (11, 13, 15), are openings (24). The swirl direction of the swirl vanes (18) in adjacent annular ducts (10, 12, 14) conducting the contaminated medium is mutually opposite. The combustion takes place preferably under raised pressure, this pressure being applied by a compressor (34) driven by a waste-gas turbine (38). <IMAGE>
