[origin: WO9214578A1] In a process for machining workpieces using a laser beam, the machining operation, in particular the welding depth or the degree of through welding, is monitored by detection of optical and/or acoustic signals from a non-protective, laser-induced plasma or steam. To obtain reliable monitoring results as independent as possible of signal fluctuations, the signals undergo frequency analysis and the mean amplitudes (Ax, Ay) of two different frequency bands (x, y) of the analysed frequencies are used, together with a predetermined computational function, to determine a rating value (B).
