[origin: EP0574351A1] There are described a process for aftertreating tanned leather and furs, an aftertreating composition and a process for preparing same. The aftertreating process comprises aftertreating the leather or furs with a polymer compound obtainable by (a) polymerisation of a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride having 4 to 8 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof, (b) subsequent partial esterification and/or amidation of this polymer with (b1) a C1-C30 alcohol and/or optionally a primary or secondary amine compound and/or (b2) the reaction product of an ( alpha ) unsaturated or saturated C1-C30 fatty alcohol, a C8-C22 fatty acid, a C8-C22 fatty amine or a C8-C22 fatty amide, and ( beta ) ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide in a molar ratio of 1:2 to 1:20 and optionally subsequent hydrolysis of the anhydride groups of the homopolymers using aqueous bases. The leathers or furs aftertreated by the present process have a very soft and supple handle and good fullness.
