Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0575309A1] The internal combustion engine with oscillating pistons has an oscillating shaft (4) with at least one bilaterally acting piston (6). The piston (6) is tightly guided in a housing (1). In addition the piston (6) has a transverse slot (7), in which a sliding block (8) is displaceably arranged, in which a journal (9) of a crankshaft (16) engages. The crankshaft (16) is thereby set in a rotational movement by an oscillating movement of the piston (6). In accordance with the invention the crankshaft (16) lies at right angles to the oscillating shaft (4). The sliding block (8) is guided in the transverse slot (7) along a circular arc, the centre point of the circular arc lying on the oscillating shaft (4). The transverse slot (7) and the oscillating shaft (4) lie in a common plane. In this way the axis of the crankshaft (16) intersects the oscillating shaft (4), which is often advantageous for reasons of space. It is useful if the oscillating piston internal combustion engine is a two-stroke engine with four chambers, the intake chambers being connected to the piston (6) with transverse slot (7) and the combustion chambers being connected to the other piston (5). The engine, however, can also have four combustion chambers. <IMAGE>
