The invention relates to a thermal printer (1) with a thermal printing head (2) which has a row of electrically actuable heating elements (5) which are held resting on a counter pressure roller (6), it being possible to introduce labels (7) which are to be printed between the heating elements (5) and the counter pressure roller (6), with a control circuit (3) which is connected to the thermal printing head (2) and has the purpose of controlling the thermal printer (1) and with a processor (4) which is connected to the control circuit (3). In order to provide a thermal printer whose control is automatically matched to the type of label paper inserted into the printer, the labels (7) or a carrier strip which holds the labels (7) are provided with at least one mark which indicates the type of paper, which marks cannot be detected by the human eye on the sides provided for printing of the labels inserted into the printer, and the thermal printer (1) has a scanner (20) which is connected to the processor (4) for scanning the marks. <IMAGE>

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf einen Thermodrucker (1) mit einem Thermodruckkopf (2), der eine Reihe elektrisch ansteuerbarer Heizelemente (5) aufweist, die auf einer Gegendruckrolle (6) in Anlage gehalten sind, wobei zu bedruckende Etiketten (7) zwischen den Heizelementen (5) und der Gegendruckrolle (6) hindurchführbar sind, mit einer mit dem Thermodruckkopf (2) verbundenen Steuerschaltung (3) zur Steuerung des Thermodruckers (1) und mit einem mit der Steuerschaltung (3) verbundenen Prozessor(4). Um einen Thermodrucker zu schaffen, dessen Steuerung sich automatisch der Sorte des in den Drucker eingelegten Etikettenpapieres anpaßt, sind die Etiketten (7) oder ein die Etiketten (7) halterndes Trägerband mit mindestens einer die Papiersorte kennzeichnenden Markierung versehen, die auf den zum Bedrucken vorgesehenen Seiten der in den Drucker eingelegten Etiketten für das menschliche Auge nicht erkennbar sind und weist der Thermodrucker (1) einen mit dem Prozessor (4) verbundenen Scanner (20) zum Abtasten der Markierungen auf. <IMAGE>
