[origin: EP0575772A1] The invention relates to a thermal printer (1) with a thermal printing head (2) which has a row of electrically actuable heating elements (5) which are held resting on a counter pressure roller (6), it being possible to introduce labels (7) which are to be printed between the heating elements (5) and the counter pressure roller (6), with a control circuit (3) which is connected to the thermal printing head (2) and has the purpose of controlling the thermal printer (1) and with a processor (4) which is connected to the control circuit (3). In order to provide a thermal printer whose control is automatically matched to the type of label paper inserted into the printer, the labels (7) or a carrier strip which holds the labels (7) are provided with at least one mark which indicates the type of paper, which marks cannot be detected by the human eye on the sides provided for printing of the labels inserted into the printer, and the thermal printer (1) has a scanner (20) which is connected to the processor (4) for scanning the marks. <IMAGE>
