[origin: EP0577068A1] A bending machine for forming metal plates by bending the periphery of a flat sheet-metal blank (19) comprises a bending device with a clamping device having a fixed clamping beam (5), a holding-down device (4) which can be moved in the vertical direction, and bending beams (305, 306), in which arrangement the length of the holding-down device (4) is to be adapted to the bend to be performed and the holding-down device (4) has a modular longitudinal construction with a central portion (6) to which additional portions (7) with a predetermined length and two end portions (118) can be symetrically fastened, having a transverse edge and a longitudinal edge which runs along the bending line. A manipulator serves to position the sheet (19) in the work plane of the bending device. The holding-down device (4) furthermore has at least one flexible portion (9), which is formed by an assembly of individual segments between which respective elastically compressible spacer elements are arranged in such a way that adjustable spacings can be formed between the segments.
