Abstract (en)
A liquid crystal electrooptical element comprises a pair of substrates (5) positioned between a pair of polarizing plates (7), electrodes (4) and alignment films (2) disposed on the respective opposing inside surfaces of said substrates (5), and a chiral nematic liquid crystal (21) sandwiched between said pair of substrates (5). The liquid crystal is switched between metastable states and the polarization axes of both polarization plates (7) are set to specific angles according to the initial state of the liquid crystal and the product of the thickness and DELTA n of the liquid crystal layer, thereby to achieve a display characteristic with a high contrast ratio and a high transmittance. <IMAGE>
