[origin: EP0583633A1] The invention relates to the problem of loading motor vehicles onto railway trains and from railway trains. In a first device for loading motor vehicles, at least one transfer wagon and one conveying device are provided, motor vehicles being loaded from the conveying device onto moving railway trains and from moving railway trains onto the conveying device with the aid of this transfer wagon. When operated in the loading mode, pallets with vehicles roll on a conveying device to a transfer wagon. The transfer wagon receives at least one pallet from the conveying device by transverse displacement and accelerates to the speed of a travelling railway train. The transfer wagon docks with a wagon of the train and transfers the pallet by transverse displacement. When operated in the unloading mode, the transfer wagon docks with a wagon of the train and receives at least one pallet with a vehicle by transverse displacement. The transverse wagon reduces its speed from that of the train to the speed of the conveying device and transfers the pallets to the conveying device by transverse displacement. In a second device for loading motor vehicles from a conveying device to stationary railway trains and from stationary railways trains to a conveying device, pallets with vehicles roll on a conveying device in parallel with a stationary railway train. At at least one loading station, pallets are loaded by transverse displacement from the conveying device onto wagons of the train standing at the respective loading station or from such wagons onto the conveying device. The train is driven in each case after a loading process in such a way that further wagons of the train can be loaded or unloaded.
