[origin: EP0583697A2] The present invention relates to a process for economy and plumping (filling) chrome tanning wherein the pelts are admixed in the pickle bath with an aldehyde- and/or keto-carboxylic acid and then tanned, characterised in that the addition of the aldehyde- and/or keto-carboxylic acid and any other organic and/or inorganic acids is preceded by a pretreatment of the delimed and bated pelts with anionic, colloidal silicate solution.
