Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0584575A1] The invention relates to a mechanism for switching an internal combustion engine from one operating mode to another. The master pistons 5 to 8, driven by a camshaft 3, are connected to either of slave pistons 9 and 10 by an axially movable piston slide valve 11. Due to the arrangement of the control bores 12 to 15 in the piston slide valve 11, various combinations of the connection of master pistons 5 to 8 with the slave pistons 9 and 10 can be brought about by its axial movement, as a result of which the control of inlet valves and exhaust valves by way of pushrods 1 and 2 can be adjusted to various marginal conditions. For example, it is possible to switch easily from engine to braking operation and vice versa or from two-stroke to four-stroke operation. The invention is preferably used in diesel internal combustion engines in commercial vehicles. <IMAGE>
