This compressed air is fed symmetrically to the device 1 via a distributor unit 23. This compressed air emerges via a so-called Laval nozzle and, above this Laval nozzle, generates a vacuum which acts on the meniscus of the applied layer between the slit of the coating nozzle and the substrate 4. Provided in the device 1 are displaceable seals 27 which make it possible to adapt the width of the nozzle to the width over which the substrate 4 is to be coated.
