The subject of the present invention is a height-adjusting mechanism for a chair's backrest in which the height is adjusted by means of a toothed rack (13) produced in the backrest supporting upright (10), and by means of a pivoting locking/releasing handle (15) mounted on a pivot in the backrest supporting plate (11) and having a stop pin (16) which can engage at several levels in the toothed rack (13) with the aid of a spring (19). <IMAGE>
