[origin: EP0589730A1] An electric lamp (10), such as a fluorescent tube, has an envelope (12) with an end portion having an annular seal (38) and a groove (34). A lamp base (30) has an aluminium shell (42) which is heated and pushed over the seal (38), before cooling to form an interference fit. The shell (42) may be provided with an annular rib (52) to project into the groove (34). <IMAGE>
