[origin: EP0589834A1] The invention achieves the object of obtaining convenient operation and stable locking free from play at each selected height adjustment of the arm-and backrests for a minimal constructional outlay. A device which combines wedge and catch fastening is proposed. A supporting element (1, 21) - a bar piece or an angle - for receiving the adjusting part (3, 23), in the shape or for attachment of the arm-or backrest, has a surface structure, e.g. a wedge-angle toothing (2, 22), and with a wedge (4, 24) which bears a surface structure (2', 22') for positive engagement therewith, the adjusting part (3, 23) is locked at the selected height position. By means of an unlocking device (8, 28), the wedge (4, 24), which is pressed against the supporting part (1, 21) by a spring (6, 26), can be released for the adjusting operation. <IMAGE>
