[origin: EP0591686A2] For an internal combustion engine in which a dedicated ignition unit (12) having an ignition coil (13) and a spark plug connecter (14) is used for each cylinder, the capacitance of the spark plug connecter (14) is to be designed such that the voltage drop between the ignition coil (13) and a high-voltage switching element (22) which is arranged in the spark plug connecter (14) is as low as possible. For this purpose, the spark plug connecter (14) is configured such that an additional capacitance, as well as the capacitances of the ignition device produced by components, is formed by a metal cup (32) which is connected to the output voltage of the ignition coil (13) and is coaxially opposite a metallic screen (34) which is at earth potential. This additional capacitance is arranged in the spark plug connecter (14) such that it is connected between its connecting element (23) for the high-voltage connection of the ignition coil (13) and the electrical switch (22). This arrangement of the additional capacitance in the spark plug connecter (14) reduces the voltage drop between the ignition coil (13) and the high-voltage switching element (22).
