[origin: WO9301564A1] Apparatus having the dual function of display and optical mapping of objects including a viewing surface to which the object is adjacent, a segmented surface underlying the viewing surface and having a plurality of segments at least two of which have a controllable opacity, control apparatus for selectively varying the opacity of at least two of the segments and light detection apparatus for detecting light passing through the viewing surface and the segmented surface and for supplying signals responsive to the intensity of the detected light. The dual function apparatus includes mapping apparatus operative, in an opacity determination mode, for sequential variation of the opacity of the at least two segments and for determination of the opacity of portions of the object based on the signals.
