[origin: EP0595764A1] The gear pump is suitable in particular for the extraction of highly viscous media from a vacuum against a high delivery pressure. It comprises a gear pair (2) and an inlet region as well as an outlet region in a housing. The inlet (4) has an enlargement (10) which reaches at least as far as the plane (11) of the gear axes (12), the length R of this enlargement parallel to the plane of the gear axes and perpendicularly to the gear axes being greater than the length D of the gear pair. According to the invention, the enlargement (10) has a width C at the gears (2) in the direction of the gear axes (12) which is greater than the tooth width T. <IMAGE>
